Stigma & Discrimination in the Workplace

What Can You Do

Language Matters

Our language reflects our beliefs and the way we view people. We may be unaware of the impact that the words we choose have on our own attitude and those around us. The words we choose can convey belief in and genuine respect for someone or can do the opposite. People living with mental illness or addictions tend to be put down, discouraged, demoralized and marginalized. By choosing our words carefully, we can fight stigma. An illness or a diagnosis does not define who we are. We are people first and foremost.
